Living in Lucan

Lucan is a Main Street village up Highway 4 from north London, with a busy community centre, a museum that tells one of Ontario's best-known stories, and a township that calls itself less than half an hour from London, Grand Bend and Stratford. Granton and Clandeboye make up the rest of the township.

Lucan, in plain words

The Township of Lucan Biddulph was formed on January 1, 1999, when the Village of Lucan and Biddulph Township came together. The township describes itself as a picturesque rural farming community with two urban settlements, Lucan and Granton, and it puts itself less than half an hour from each of London, Grand Bend and Stratford, and about two hours west of Toronto. Clandeboye, Mooresville, Elginfield, Whalen Corners and Prospect Hill are the other communities inside it. Lucan is where the township office is.

How Lucan began

Lucan's story starts before the village had its name. In 1829 the Canada Company granted refuge and land to about 200 Black Americans from Cincinnati, who founded the Wilberforce colony; the township describes Wilberforce as a settlement commonly known to be part of the Underground Railroad. Many of those settlers later moved on to the cities, and a few stayed to farm. Irish settlers fleeing the potato famine and a large English group followed, and the village they built was first called Marystown, after the wife of the surveyor John McDonald. That name was already registered with the Post Office, so it became Lucan, in tribute to Lord Lucan. The Grand Trunk Railway came through in 1856, the post office followed in 1857, and Lucan was incorporated as a village in 1872.

The Donnelly story

Lucan is also where people come to learn about the Donnellys, an Irish Catholic family who settled in Biddulph Township on the road that became known as the Roman Line, about 25 km north-west of London. After years of feuding with neighbours, a vigilante mob attacked the family on the night of February 3 into February 4, 1880, killed five members of the family and burned the farmhouse. There were two trials in London, and no one was ever convicted.

The Lucan Area Heritage & Donnelly Museum, at 171 Main Street, tells that story alongside the rest of Lucan's: the early Black settlement, the Irish and Dutch settlers, and local history more broadly, with a library and local history centre for genealogy. In season it's open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm, from Mother's Day weekend to the end of September, and from October 1, 2026 to May 8, 2027 it's open Thursday to Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm. It also runs evening events, including a candlelight tour of the museum.

That history is part of the feel of the place, but Lucan today is a lively village: a Main Street with shops and places to eat, an arena that's busy all winter, parks with splash pads, diamonds and courts, an 18-hole golf course in the township, and a calendar full of markets, craft shows and a Santa Claus parade.

LSTAR's figures for the whole municipality. One month can mislead, and a village lot and a farm can sell in the same month ten times apart, so read these as the weather, not the forecast. In Lucan you'll find older homes on the streets around Main Street and newer homes on the streets that have grown out from it. Granton is a smaller village with its own park, rink and fire station. Clandeboye sits just north of Lucan on Highway 4. Outside the villages it's farmland, with country homes and farms on larger lots; plan on a private well and septic system out there, and make inspections of both a condition of your offer.

The township handles planning, building permits and development charges, and has pages on additional residential units, its official plan review and its servicing master plan. If you're picturing a second unit, an addition or a severance, ask the township first.

  • 03Highway 4 is the commute. It runs straight down through Arva into north London, and Route 1 of County Connect runs it on weekdays if you'd rather not drive.
  • 04Granton is its own village. It has its own park, rink, fire station and cenotaph, and it's on municipal sewer like Lucan.
